Top 10 Easter Basket Ideas
It’s almost that time of the year again - only a few more weeks until the Easter bunny comes hopping around that corner! And even though you may have outgrown the Easter egg hunt, you can certainly still enjoy the holiday spirit through Easter baskets and other thoughtful gifts.
Although Easter baskets are closely correlated with Easter Sunday, the roots actually stem from Pagan history. Ancient farmers depended on their livestock and crops for a living, so the spring equinox was a special time in their cultures. (Equinox is when the length of daytime and nighttime become equal.) Middle Eastern cultures traditionally celebrated the first seedlings of their new crops. They would bring the seedlings in baskets to temples to be blessed and to pray to their gods for abundance of crops throughout the season. Christians also had a similar tradition but instead, they would bring an Easter feast in large baskets to church to be blessed by priests.
So, in a nutshell, (or should I say eggshell?) the food bearing baskets are symbolic for the arrival of Spring.
