Travel Essentials

The proper preparation for your trip can make a huge difference when executed properly. While you’re away from home it is best to feel as comfortable as possible. We suggest using a checklist while packing to ensure nothing essential is left behind. Not only will a list simplify the packing process, but it should leave you enough space in your suitcase to bring home souvenirs from your trip.

Besides clothing and toiletries, there are other products that will guarantee the utmost comfort while en route. These travel accessories may add extra expenses onto your trip budget, but the service they provide is priceless.

Now that you’ve gathered all of your clothing and travel accessories, you’re going to need some entertainment for the journey ahead. Podcasts are a great way to pass the time. Besides the fact that they are free, podcasts also cover a wide variety of subjects and can be paused for any pit stops that come up along the way.

1. Wild Thing by Foxtopus Ink

Out in the PNW, some might call Sasquatch the most popular urban myth. But is Bigfoot really just fantasy? Laura Krantz explores the region in her nine part series that aims to prove Sasquatch’s existence from a scientific standpoint. Whether it’s exploring Bigfoot nests, DNA testing, or chatting with other enthusiasts, the Wild Thing podcast just might turn you into a believer.

2. Imagined Life by Wondery

Each episode guides listeners through an immersive story of a famous person’s life. The catch is that you will only find out who that person is at the end of the podcast. Imagined Life is part mystery, part story, part inspiration, and wholly entertaining to step into someone else’s shoes.

3. Happier by Gretchen Rubin

From the author of The Happiness Project, this podcast focuses on the subject of happiness by drawing your attention towards human nature. For each episode, Rubin reveals her own happiness hacks for a wide variety of topics. In her own words, “I believe there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for becoming happier, healthier, more productive, or more creative; when we know ourselves and what works for us, we can change our habits and our lives.”

4. Tiny Desk Concerts by NPR

This podcast is my personal favorite! When on a long road trip, sometimes it’s hard to perpetually choose what music you want to listen to. Tiny Desk Concerts provides the tunes without the hassle of endlessly scrolling through your music library. Imagine having some of your favorite artists perform in the smallest venue possible. NPR brings some of your favorite artists into an intimate setting that will make you tap your toes and your heart sing.

If reading is more your style, audiobooks are a great way to pass the time while traveling. From my personal experience, the narrator plays the most pivotal role in audiobooks; therefore, this list provides examples with great narration. There’s no need to invest in a book light or carry heavy books while listening to the lively narration of your favorite novels.

1. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Nobody “Bod” Owens is adopted by supernatural occupants of a graveyard after his family is brutally murdered. Although it seems like a dark topic, this young adult fantasy novel brings awareness to the darker side of human existence. Gaiman is not only a great writer, but also a brilliant narrator. Plus it really can’t get any better than listening to the author narrate his own novel while having the support of a full cast?

2. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist tells the story of a young shepherd named Santiago who is able to find a treasure beyond his wildest dreams. Along the way, he learns to listen to his heart and, more importantly, realizes that his dreams, or his Personal Legend, are not just his but part of the Soul of the Universe. There are many powerful life lessons to be learned through Santiago such as fate, love, unity, and many more.

3. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their impulsive instructors. This reimagination of the Victorian era brings fantasy to the forefront while exploring the power of love.

With all of the advances in technology, the days of pulling out a paper map for directions are behind us. The most important app to have is going to be one that gives accurate directions, and if that app has offline capabilities then you’ll be golden. It’s best to have an assortment of apps at your disposal while traveling in unknown territory. The following suggestions don’t comprise a comprehensive list, but they will provide a good head start on making sure you’re ready for your upcoming adventure.

1. Pocket

Having the ability to save articles, videos, and webpages for offline viewing will make a world of difference in your travels. By downloading this app, you’ll be able to access your saved content from any device. Hyperlinks can be saved via copy & paste, email, share extension, or manually on Pocket’s website. It’s a simple process – just save, sync, and download.

2. Citymapper

One of the best parts about traveling is exploring an unknown city; however, knowing which methods of transit will get you to your destination can be difficult. Citymapper analyzes all methods of transit in selected large urban areas. From there, you’re able to browse multiple options along with times, prices, and frequency. The app’s offline capability brings Citymapper to the next level.

3. Roadtrippers

My favorite part about road trips is finding unique pit stops along the way. This app allows you to find interesting places along your route. After discovering a destination that piques your interest, you’ll have the capability of saving, sharing, or getting directions to that newly found hidden gem.

Everyone will have their own personal preference when it comes to what travel items and apps make them feel most comfortable. This comprehensive list should give you a great head start on preparing for your travels. Although I forgot to mention the most important item of all…an Erin Baker’s Breakfast Cookie! A nutritious, portable, delicious snack that will provide you lasting energy while on the road.
