Healthy Pops

For this entry we are pleased to have Lindsay Renouf as a special guest blogger! We read about these great "Healthy Pops" on her blog site at and just had to share the recipe with you!

As a Mommy of a 3-year-old boy and two big pups, a routine part of each and every day is a morning walk. Once we complete a few laps around the neighborhood, we return home and without hesitation, Carter says, "Mommy, I want a pie-sicle." Translation: "popsicle". Last summer, I used to buy him the traditional Popsicle-brand frozen treats in the fun "Dora the Explorer" shapes. I never even thought to check out the ingredients.

  • Liquid Sugar? Check
  • High Fructose Corn Syrup? Check
  • Corn Syrup? Check
  • Lots of "Juice from Concentrate"? Check
Not to mention that these were the "slow-melt" popsicles. I don't even want to know what is added to make them melt in slow motion. Scary.

Needless to say, we now skip over those popsicles. But I couldn't believe that after looking at every single brand, I could only find ONE that didn't have high fructose corn syrup or regular corn syrup. It did however have sugar as the first ingredient. Sigh. So, I left sans "pie-sicles" and set off to make my own using these:

I bought these molds on Amazon a few days ago and I just love them. They are very durable, BPA free, have drip catchers, and a nice stand that stores your homemade frozen treats upright in the freezer.

My first mission was to incorporate veggies (big surprise) into the popsicle. What can I say–I take pride in being a Mommy with a son who gets a full serving of vegetables from his popsicle. :)

Flavor #1:
Orange Strawberry Veg-sicle
  • 2 oranges
  • 3 strawberries
  • 4 baby carrots
  • Honey to sweeten
  • Handful of raw spinach
  • ¼ cup of water
Blend all together and pour into your molds.


Flavor #2: Fabulous Fruit-sicle

No picture of this one—I forgot to snap one! But here’s the recipe!

  • Juice 2 oranges
  • 5 strawberries
  • 1 banana
  • Honey to sweeten (if needed)
  • ½ cup water
Blend all together and pour into your molds!


Flavor #3: Strawberry Colada
(Okay - so this one *may* have been for Mommy, but it's still kid friendly)

  • ½ cup Silk Vanilla Coconut Milk
  • 3 Strawberries
  • ½ banana
  • 2 TBSP shredded unsweetened coconut
Blend and pour into your molds.

Carter was without popsicles for a full day and needed his "pie-sicle" fix ASAP. So as soon as these babies were frozen, we grabbed one. Carter picked the green one. One Veg-sicle coming up!

I could immediately tell from his puzzled expression that he was not entirely trusting of this leafy green colored popsicle.

He is more accustomed to lime green or neon yellow ones…as evidenced by the fact that he held it upside down and started licking the handle. Mommy flipped it around for him and voila…

Pie-sicle love…

Carter can still enjoy his favorite frozen treats on these hot Summer-like Spring days, and I'm a much happier Mommy knowing that his frozen treats are filled with 100% all natural ingredients.

AND they melt in REAL time…none of this "slow motion" hoopla.

I can already see an assortment of flavors in our future—creamy banana, peanut butter banana, watermelon, pineapple, mango-melon, lemon-lime, multi-flavor pops with different layers…I just love the endless creativity you can have with these! :)
